IFCS Occupational Health and SafetyProgramme Area A: Expanding and
Accelerating
|
| This initial listing of selected resources has been compiled
by an IFCS Champion Work Group on OSH. It is intended to provide
information and guidance. The mention of specific resources or
their producers does not imply that they are endorsed or recommended
by the Intergovernmental Forum on Chemical Safety in preference
to others of a similar nature that are not mentioned. There are many interlinkages between the recommendations, thus the resources listed in many cases support several recommendations, although listed only under one. Unless otherwise indicated, the resources list are available only in English. Suggestions of additional resources for listing on the website may be submitted to the IFCS Secretariat. Please indicate the programme(s) and specific recommendation(s) that the resource supports. |
Worldwide Initiatives
Recommended action items:
Develop and implement relevant approaches standards and guidance material for recording, collecting and analyzing workplace data. These can be undertaken in conjunction with the implementation of the ILO List of Occupational Diseases Recommendation (No. 194), 2002, and the Protocol of 2002 to the Occupational Safety and Health Convention (No. 155), 1981.
Workplace and Employee Survey (WES)
The document is based on the Workplace and Employee Survey (WES), which is designed to explore a broad range of issues relating to employers and their employees. The survey aims to shed light on the relationships among competitiveness, innovation, technology use and human resource management on the employer side and technology use, training, job stability and earnings on the employee side.
NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods (NMAM)
NMAM is a collection of methods for sampling and analysis of contaminants in workplace air, and in the blood and urine of workers who are occupationally exposed. These methods have been developed or adapted by NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, USA) or its partners and have been evaluated according to established experimental protocols and performance criteria. NMAM also includes chapters on quality assurance, sampling, portable instrumentation, etc.
Develop, establish and enhance suitable measures for monitoring of workplaces and for careful clinical surveillance of workers.
The NIOSH Surveillance Strategic Plan
NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, USA) embarked on a process to assess current surveillance needs and to identify its goals for the next decade. The Surveillance Strategic Plan is the result of this effort.

Facilitate the collection of data for analysis with means to ensure that the data elements cannot be tracked back to specific workers, worksites or employers.
AOEC Exposure Code System
Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics (AOEC)Originally intended mainly for finding and matching cases within the AOEC Case Report Database, this resource is the newest of its kind. It is intended to supplement coding for Occupational & Environmental Diseases by other than SOC job codes and SIC employer codes. Included are such aspects as anesthetic gases, toxigenic fungi and ergonomic hazards. Available are not only all the exposure codes, but a dynamic look-up engine which makes the use of the codes much easier.
Establish the role and responsibilities of employers, employees and governments in reporting, recording, collecting and assessing data from workplaces.
OSHA Hazard Communication Standard 1900.1200
US Department of Labor - Occupational Safety & Health AdministrationThe purpose of the Occupational Safety and Health Standard 1910.1200 Toxic and Hazardous Substances Section on Hazard Communication is to ensure that the hazards of all chemicals produced or imported are evaluated, and that information concerning their hazards is transmitted to employers and employees.

SpanishFundamental principles of occupational health and safety (ILO) 2001 - B. O. Alli
This practical guide to the development of effective occupational health and safety policies and programmes focuses on the key topics essential to promoting health and safety in the workplace. It presents a concise overview of the issues involved, together with specific guidelines for policy design and implementation at both national and enterprise levels. The operational aspects of meeting health and safety requirements are also covered, with detailed sections on legislation and enforcement, occupational health surveillance, and preventive and protective measures, as well as health education and training. There is an explanation of the main concepts in occupational health and demonstrates how relevant ILO Conventions and Recommendations define workers' rights and allocate duties and responsibilities to competent authorities, employers and workers. Examples are given of good practice in the surveillance of workers' health and of the working environment, occupational health services, and reduction of the incidence of work-related injuries and diseases. Much practical advice is given to authorities, employers and workers, along with a glossary, a list of related publications and an example of a health and safety policy.IPCS Chemical Safety Training Modules
The Training Modules on Chemical Safety have been compiled in order to introduce safe use of chemicals at places of work, to present classification systems for the labelling and transport of dangerous goods, to allow the reading and use of chemical safety cards, to give a basic overview of toxicology and to disseminate information on selected, widely used, hazardous substances. It contains material usable in handouts, demonstrations and exercises, as well as slides, colour transparencies and diskettes containing text files and databases.
